About Lulu

Lulu is an 8-year-old, 20 lb Dachshund/Chihuahua mix from New York City (though she’d ideally be around 15–17 lbs).

She is one of the sweetest, most loving, and cuddly little dogs you’ll ever meet. Lulu forms incredibly deep bonds with her people and is looking for a forever family who will love her as deeply as she’ll love them in return.

When Lulu first arrived in foster care, she was understandably unsure of her new surroundings and needed a little time and space to settle in. Once she realized she was safe, she adjusted beautifully and blossomed into the loyal, affectionate companion she is today.

Lulu enjoys three walks a day and absolutely loves exploring the world through her nose. She takes her time sniffing every interesting scent and proudly checking in on her neighborhood. She’s also developed a love for adventures and happily rides along in a backpack while exploring the city. Whether it’s a walk around the block or an afternoon outing, Lulu is happiest when she’s included.

She may love her naps and snuggles at home, but Lulu also enjoys being out and about. She’s traveled on trains, ridden in taxis, visited parks, explored new neighborhoods, and spent time at friends’ apartments. Everywhere she goes, she is calm, well-mannered, and incredibly easy to bring along. She truly adapts wherever life takes her.

On walks, Lulu has wonderful leash manners overall. She can pull a bit when she catches an especially interesting scent, but it’s very manageable and simply part of her curious personality. Around larger dogs, she may occasionally act a little feisty but never aggressive, likely due to previously limited socialization. She responds well to gentle corrections and has become increasingly relaxed with continued positive experiences. Lulu could happily live as an only dog or with another respectful similar sized canine companion.

Lulu is incredibly smart and eager to please. She knows “sit,” understands “no,” and listens exceptionally well. She is fully house-trained and has never had an accident in her foster home. She’s also done wonderfully being left alone during the workday and patiently waits for her walks. A routine of three daily walks (morning, afternoon, and a quick evening stroll) has worked perfectly for her.

If there’s one thing to know about Lulu, it’s that she loves her people with her whole heart. Once she bonds with someone, she wants to be wherever they are, following them from room to room, curling up nearby while they work, or snuggling beside them in bed if invited. If the bathroom door closes, don’t be surprised if she politely scratches at it to remind you she’d rather keep you company. At the same time, she’s perfectly content entertaining herself and will often wander off for a peaceful nap, usually nestled against the pillows.

Lulu is an easy dog to care for and an even easier dog to love. She has the sweetest personality, equal parts affectionate, loyal, and delightfully sassy. She’ll make you laugh with her silly moments, melt your heart with her cuddles, and remind you every day how special the bond between a dog and their person can be.

Lulu’s forever family will welcome her as a true member of the family, include her in everyday adventures, and continue building the confidence she’s gained in foster care. She isn’t looking for perfection, she’s simply looking for someone to love. In return, she’ll give them her whole heart.

Whoever adopts Lulu won’t just be gaining a dog, they’ll be gaining a best friend.

Chihuahua temperament

Bold and deeply bonded to one or two people. Chihuahuas are often wary of strangers and can be snappy if they were never taught that hands are safe — early gentle socialization matters.

Exercise

Low — short walks and indoor play are plenty.

In a NYC apartment

Extremely apartment-friendly and easy to carry on the subway. They get cold fast and need a sweater most of the winter.
